Are engineered wood floors suitable for basements?
One of the most significant advantages of engineered flooring is that its construction makes it stable and better able to handle water. As a result, it can be installed in any home grade level, which includes the basement. This hardwood version is taking over a significant share of the wood flooring industry because it appeals to those who want both beauty and practicality. Whether you are shopping for engineered or solid hardwood, feel free to come into our showroom when you are shopping for wood floors in Canton, MI.
Construction makes the difference
While solid is one thickness throughout, resulting in the fibers lying in a parallel position, engineered wood floors are layered. At the top is the veneer layer, your species-of-choice with undertones, knots, grains, swirls, and wormholes. However, underneath are three or more genuine wood layers combined with a little resin and then placed in a crosswise position. Unlike solid, it won’t shrink or contract to adjust to the weather, and no acclimation is needed.
Like solid, it can be refinished and adds value to a property. You have the same wide selection for species, with the most popular woods being oak, hickory, walnut, ash, maple, and cherry. Planks are generally a little wider or shorter, but manufacturers are now offering more varied sizes.
Whether solid hardwood or engineered, thickness matters because it determines how often the floors can be sanded. Thicker is better, and engineered floors come in a range, from ⅜-inch to ½-inch, which can determine the number of times you can refinish the floor.
Is installation the same or different?
While solid is one technique, the tongue, and groove, engineered, offer an additional floating floor option. This technique is fast, uncomplicated, and possibly less expensive; the pieces click together, mat, then hover over the existing subfloor with no nails or glue. Underlayments are often recommended for engineered floating floors, as they provide additional stability.
