Carpet in Westland, MI from Avita Carpet & Flooring

Nylon vs. polyester: what is the difference?

Today, most carpet flooring is made with nylon, and that has been true for decades. Nylon is a durable fiber that resists crushing and matting. Polyester entered the market about twenty years after nylon. When it became available in the 1960s, homeowners immediately noticed that its appearance and feel were similar to wool. Both fiber options can be found at Avita Carpet & Flooring. We offer carpet in Westland, Michigan, along with other types of flooring and related services.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic carpet fiber that is prized for its natural softness and vibrant colors. In addition to dyeing well, polyester is inherently stain-resistant, so spills do not penetrate the fibers. A polyester carpet is ideal for low traffic areas such as bedrooms. Since this floor covering resists fading, it is appropriate for rooms that receive direct sunlight. Much of the polyester carpeting on the market is made with recycled plastic soft drink and water bottles.

Nylon

Nylon is the fiber of choice for over 60% of homeowners. It's a resilient fiber that bounces back after compression. Thus, furniture and heavy electronics leave no lasting indentations when they are removed. Nylon carpet is also abrasion-resistant and durable, and therefore, appropriate for the home's heavy traffic areas. While nylon is more costly than several other synthetic fibers, including polyester, it is an excellent value for the price.
